The Littliest Groupie

A certain someone notices when I don't mention her on the blog. She also recently learned how to keep track of how long her Daddy has been gone on tour and when he will be home....to the minute, Lord help me! So, this post commemorates her little Father/Daughter tradition of hot vanilla steamers and hang time with Daddy-O before he hits the road.

February 15....she'll be at the airport with bells on....waiting for souvenirs, leftover guitar pics and music schwag! See you soon, Daddy! And happy Birthday!

Indian Princess Campsite

I thought she would say, "Princess" or "Fairies"....we don't exactly have a lot of either influences around our house but, still, I thought a five year old little girl would probably request one of those for her first big girl room re-decorate. So, when she said "Indian Princess Campground", Mommy was relieved, actually stoked! Here is a peek at what we came up with.

Twin bed with storage cubbies that can someday be used as upright shelves. Handmade pillows from Spaghetti Western Style, of course.

Black and white 1960's Pow-Wow Princess and faux petrified wood shelf. (The book is the 5th in the Ramona Quimby series....we're hooked!)

The headress and yarn wig are from Halloween past. Snow globes from adventures on the road.

Rustic and Folk art collection from various family members and flea markets.

My little "Blondie" pockets concert flyers from coffee shops and bulletin boards....she folds them up and sneaks them home. It's probably kind of naughty and I should try to make her stop, but I think it's kind of cool that she looks out for her favorite groups.....her Grace Potter & The Nocturnals obsession is off the charts.

The teepee is used as a changing room, tea party spot, and self-imposed timeouts. We bought the Sun painting at Urban Outfitters.

My little Blondie spent 4 days playin' her fiddle and hangin' out with her Dad in Winfield, Kansas at the Bluegrass Festival (that's Ike singing back-up). This photo was taken at Stage 7 at 1:30 in the morning...yikes...I know, what the heck was she doing up at that hour, but she couldn't wait to get up next to her Dad and let it rip...she is a performer, that's for sure...so sweet.

Native Americans believe that the night air is filled with dreams both good and bad. The dream catcher when hung over or near your bed swinging freely in the air, catches the dreams as they flow by. The good dreams know how to pass through the dream catcher, slipping through the outer holes and sliding down the soft feathers so gently that many times the sleeper does not know that he or she is dreaming. The bad dreams not knowing the way, get tangled in the dream catcher and perish with the first light of the new day.

We're sorry we've been away so long.....we soaked every last second out of the summer, but, we're back to basics around here....Fall is our favorite!

Going West.... Going Back

I bought this souvenir necklace in Yellowstone National Park when I was a little girl.....I still have it....I only wear it when I'm going to spend lots of time in the outdoors and just today my little "Blondie" asked if she could wear it on our mountain adventure......to be honest, it was hard to share, but of course, I did, and she's so proud. We're leaving Vail today for Crested Butte then on to the Wind River Reservation.
This belt buckle is another fun piece, reminiscent of the female homesteaders in the Tetons. We'll be collecting lot's more fun pieces on our trip and will share soon! Lot's of hugs and kisses to our beautiful friends in the Vail Valley! Miss you already!

Cover Love..... Jessi Colter

Jessie Colter aligned herself with the Outlaw image of the 1970’s Country music scene with both her writing and sense of renegade style. Her gypsy cowgirl wardrobe was a perfect match to her smoky voice and lady-in-love lyrics.

In 1975, "I'm Not Lisa," a single from the LP I'm Jessi Colter, hit number one on Billboard's country charts while also making the Top Five on the pop charts.

Also in 1976, Colter teamed with Waylon Jennings (whom she married), Willie Nelson, and Tompall Glaser for the album “Wanted! The Outlaws,” which at the time of its release was the biggest-selling album in country history, and the first country album certified platinum in sales.

Colter and Jennings re-teamed in 1981 for Leather and Lace, an album of duets featuring the hits "Storms Never Last" and the medley "Wild Side of Life/It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels."

I've worn this tank top out, this summer....seriously....it's been my go-to piece for day time play with my little "Blondie" and the night scene for catching live music and dinners with friends (paired with shorts and boots, scarves, funky jewelry, etc.) We have a few left and just opened a fresh batch of youth sizes on white tanks with utility pockets! Let us know if you're interested!
I'm kind of an expert picnic girl. We don't stop with sandwiches and fruit salad....we do lot's of evening picnics at various parks and outdoor events and have been having a blast doing "breakfast on the blanket," as my 4 yr old calls it. This vintage green blanket is perfect and I can't wait to pass it on to her when she is a little older.
We've had a blast keeping these things on hand....slipping a few to friends and clients just to see them smile and try to remember the last time they had a few! Behind closed doors......

Somewhere in southeast Kansas on a very dusty day......

I have a big imagination, cinematic even....but I couldn't figure out why this old building was tattered, and moldy and falling down while the bright red door was absolutely flawless. I could tell it was new! There were piles of rubbish everywhere but this single chair was places just by the door with precise intention. It looked like an old bar or saloon or maybe even a historic Theater or Playhouse.

I hope this wise man door knocker didn't mind my little "Blondie" and I poking around a bit. We found a few broken down guitars and lots of old glassware in piles by the overgrown garden. This would have been a great place for a drink and a few tunes. Maybe next trip.

Cover Love..... Rita Coolidge

Rita Coolidge

The beautiful Rita Coolidge, of Cherokee Indian and Scottish descent began her singing career with her sisters at County Fairs. She pursued an Art degree at Florida State and sang radio jingles while in college to pay the bills.

She was introduced to and began performing with Leon Russell, whom wrote “Delta Lady” about her, as well as many other music legends. She met Kris Kristofferson in 1973. They married, toured and recorded (Full Moon, Breakaway, Natural Act) and graced the cover of Rolling Stone. She released several of her own albums with A&M Records where she became extremely popular for her ballads including “All Time High” for the James Bond movie, Octupussy in 1983.

We love her Native Bohemian style, long jet black hair and signature turquoise jewelry...nobody wears it like her! She is a top 5 style icon here at Spaghetti Western!

This album hangs in my studio....I love it! The photo was taken a picnic birthday party for Willie Nelson!

Zipper pulls

The cutest old guy named Walt, makes these cool little accessories and I buy 'em out every time he and his wife catch up with me! Buffalo nickels, wheat pennies, tons of old coins, polished and shined with clip-on pulls for you to add to a zipper, purse, etc.

My favorite ones have stones soldered to them...we have tigers eye, onyx, turquoise, and a few more. I remove the zipper clip and wear mine on necklaces and bracelets. $10 covers tax and shipping Let us know if you like 'em and we can tell Walt to keep 'em comin!

Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers

Steve Martin stopped in Kansas City with the Steep Canyon Rangers for a show at the Midland Theater.

His last album, Crows, won a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album in 2009. He played tons of originals and of course a few staples from the old days.

Thanks to The Steep Canyon Rangers for tickets and backstage laughs.

Alone With Friends at Davey's

Most of the time, if you see Nate Gawron on stage, he's playing the upright with The Wilders, or electric bass with Switchitter, (more about this band later) but on April 14, he sat down with his guitar, songbook of original tunes and a few fellow Kansas City musicians for an awesome show. Nate, covered a little Waylon, Hank, and Kristofferson, but treated us to his own songs for the majority of the night and well, he gave the 'ol boys a run for their money.

Garrett White, Eddie Crane and Sterling Brown, three amazing Kansas City musicians and friends sat in for a few songs.

More intimate shows are on the calendar at Davey's Uptown Ramblers Club as well as their legendary lineups in the stage room.

Nelson Atkins Museum goes Native

Culture called today...it said, "Get yourself and that kid of yours to a museum and broaden your horizons...you can't spend all day watching old westerns." So my little blonde sidekick and I hit the Nelson-Atkins Museum to browse the 2nd floor Native American Exhibit. She likes to play tour guide and within minutes had convinced a few kids from a school tour to check out "a bunch of awesome."
Those boys were such good sports and survived a 15 minute dissertation on Native American culture from a 4 year old. Having watched many old movies with Mama, she actually knows her stuff!

The photo doesn't show the full-length and of course does the colors and detail no justice but it was so beautiful and regal and kind of remarkable to imagine just what kind of brave and wild and amazing man wore it. I was struck by how ironic it was to be enclosed in climate controlled glass, positioned on a stainless steel rack, under pin lights...suspended in space among Victorian era oil paintings, bronze Buddha statues, Frank Lloyd Right camp chairs, etc.

We had a great time......the exhibit doesn't disappoint....much more fun than watching The Searchers or Geronimo or Shane for the 300th time........well, almost.
